Are You A Leader?

Training for small businesses UK

A small business owner is a leader. So whether you feel like a good leader, a poor leader, or not a leader at all, you are a leader if you own a business.

So what? Why does it matter? It matters because the fundamental problem with most small businesses is that the leader is doing the wrong work. Doing the wrong work means that vital 'leadership work' never gets done - usually because you do not leave enough time and energy to do it, and that means you fail to reap the rewards that this leadership work can bring.

If this leadership work is so important, what is it? Essentially it's all about deciding what you want your business to look like and then making sure it happens. Failing to do the leadership work can mean you never get what you want from your business.

The E-Myth lays down three key elements of leadership: vision action and spirit.

Vision is about deciding what you want your business to look like if you are to receive the personal rewards you want in your life (see article Why Do You Run A Business?). In other words your business is a vehicle to bring you what you want and your vision is what this vehicle will need to look like. In The E-Myth Mastery Program this vision for your business is called Your Strategic Objective.

Having a vision - an idea in your head - gets you nowhere unless you take action. For a leader, taking action means doing what it takes to move the business towards your strategic objective. Doing what it takes means working ON the business to build systems, recruit and manage staff to run the systems and get the results needed.

Spirit is the way the business owner goes about taking action. It's about who the leader is as a person and how this is reflected throughout the business. It's about matching the spirit of the business to your own values.

If your business is not working the way you would like your first step is to review your role as leader. Are you doing the leadership work needed or is that work simply not getting done? Have you decided what you want your business to look like and, if so, are you taking action to get it there?

The E-Myth Mastery Program starts with Leadership because you will never get what you want from your business unless the leadership work gets done.
